PETA's latest effort is definitely their strangest yet: this parody of girls gone wild includes gross-out facts about dairy products and girls lifting their shirts to expose wierd prosthetic udders. I don't know if I should be outraged, offended, or just laugh.

WOW.

This reminds me curiously of Jack Thompson, that anti-gaming lawyer who went through this crazy debacle that was publicized largely through Penny Arcade.

mlarsen, you are way off. It's People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
I guess it really isn't all that extreme if you think about the twisted practices of the livestock industry. If most people educated themselves about what they are eating, they would be shocked and awed.
Read Mad Cowboy You may think twice about how crazy those PETA people are compared to cattle ranchers.

That website is brimming with so much misinformation, it is disheartening. PETA would not hesitate to sacrifice man for beast and that is where the problems lie. Their radical nature is a huge turn-off to the public. But as Harfish noted, they have the right to say it and we have the right to ignore it.

This is the worst post title in Newsvine ever. It's a starting flame post without a single piece of relevant information in it. How sad.

Not that I always agree with how they (PETA) broadcast their message, but they do make valid points. Do a little research yourself and you will probably never touch non-organic milk again.

sevenforty - That's where I think PETA continues to go wrong, that buried way underneath their shock are actual valid points, that most people never get to. They should be focusing on how to improve standards of this corporate farming world, and educating people to consider organic and local options. Instead they try to shock and disgust and get people to renounce several hundred years of lifestyle on the spot. They're going to continue to be on the fringe and loathed by many if they decide that's how they want to continue.

I grew up on small dairy farms, not everything out there is like the corporate farms PETA constantly portrays as the entire industry. People can and will have empathy with the situation if they portray it right.

I've viewed at least one of the video clips and it is disturbingly funny, regardless of the fact that I'm not really a PETA supporter. However, this comment is more regarding this post in general.

Could we please all try and refrain from posting inflammatory words in post titles and descriptions? Saying something like "Does PETA's latest campaign go too far?" is one thing, but to call it "Rediculous" (sic) in the title lowers NewsVine. I have stopped using some many news sites online for this same sort of junk posting. I'd really like to stick with NewsVine as it has great potential. I don't expect us to all be hard journalists, but at least people who can fake a news title and bother to use a spell checker.

I have seen some very educational and information valuable PETA campaigns. This one just seems to be a bit more on the edge. Although, I can still see the message they are sending.

Say what you like about milk, but it's far better for your health than the alternative for most young people these days: soda. (That's 'pop' for some of you Northerners and 'Coke' for the Deep South...)

That said, has PETA stopped channeling funds to domestic terrorists (Animal+Earth Liberation Fronts) yet?

                                      Two questions:

If everyone on the planet simultaneously gave up meat and dairy. . . .

1.) What would happen to the animals? They can't be set free, as that would result in ecological devastation. Should the governments of the world unite to buy all the ranches across the globe and maintain them as free-ranging post-domestic animal sanctuaries?

2.) What would happen to the millions of people who make their living in this industry? Could cattle ranchers become soy farmers that easily? I would think that some places where cattle or poultry are raised probably have inhospitable climates for crops. Besides, if all the ranch lands are already being kept as nature preserves. . . .

PETA almost always goes too far, so questioning whether this one ad goes too far is somewhat beside the point.

Do a little research yourself and you will probably never touch non-organic milk again.

Wrong. (At least on my part.) Quite frankly, if we "did a little research" into most anything we'd probably never do a lot of things that we enjoy doing because we don't have that knowledge.

You're onto something. These PETA fanatics should be more concerned about the backbreaking, low-wage-earning, no-insurance-having migrant workers who suffer everyday picking their precious fruits and vegetables.

I'm a fairly liberal person, but groups like PETA or the Humane Society have their priorities in all the wrong places when there are far worse things happening to human beings in this world. They should work to cure the injustices against human beings before worrying about stupid animals.

Well, if we all adopt that attitude, I'd think we'd be a pretty pathetic society. So it's a good thing most of us aren't doing that.

Also, PETA stands for "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals." They really don't have anything to do with migrant workers. I think they have their priorities exactly where they want them.

Again, not saying that I agree with them all the time nor am I saying I am a member. But they have the right to say what they want. Don't agree with them, oh well. Make you own commercial and we will make a post how you are going too far.

Now I am going to go eat some meat and read some more news.

What a wonderfully simplistic world you live in. While I disagree with some of PETA's extremist points of view, I think it is ill-conceived (and likely hypocritical) to suggest one should never take an interest in "stupid animals." So I guess I shouldn't feed my dogs tomorrow morning since that money could go to feed hungry children in Somalia. And I guess anyone going into the veterinary and zoological areas of study should also get a stern talking to. Don't they realize us humans are short on doctors and that we've yet to discover the cures of many human ailments? Why are they wasting time and resources with stupid animals? Human beings ARE stupid animals, which is exactly why PETA's stance against eating meat, for instance, is completely irrational, since we are in fact omnivores (eaters of meat and plant). I don't think animals are deserving of more concern than humans, but to say animals aren't deserving on any concern at all is so unbelievably anthropocentric that it borders on "earth is the center of the universe" territory for ignorance.
